WORKSHOP: A day in the life of a bioinformatician (COMBINE)

Take your first steps into bioinformatics by stepping through a "normal" transcriptomics pipeline. Experienced trainers will introduce various tools along the way that you’ll need to process the data.

You will work with a publicly available transcriptomics (RNA-Seq) dataset and go through common steps involved in processing this data (including read quality assessment, alignment and differential gene expression). As part of this process you will be use shell to run programs and work with files, improve reproducibility with version control and create publication quality documents with latex.

This 2-part online workshop is targeted at absolute beginners, with no coding or bioinformatics knowledge.

At the end of the workshop you will be able to:

  • Use basic shell functions

  • Version control with git

  • Format documents with latex

  • Work with real biological data

This workshop is being offered by the Australian Computational Biology and Bioinformatics Student Society with support from Australian BioCommons. For more information and registration, visit the event page on the COMBINE website.
