Simon Gladman travel grant

Simon Gladman was the talented Galaxy Australia Technical Lead and Senior Research Fellow at Melbourne Bioinformatics until his untimely death in 2022. Simon’s important legacy as an innovator, role model, supporter and community connector will be honoured by an annual award in his name.

Simon was passionate about Galaxy and its potential to democratise science. His commitment to training and community engagement took him all over the world, forging productive professional connections and establishing valuable enduring friendships. He loved to travel, and understood how deeper conversations and meaningful connections grew outside the formalities of conferences. Simon worked to ensure everyone could access these important opportunities and he was excited to be organising the first international Galaxy Community Conference to be hosted in Australia. He will be celebrated at GCC2023 with the announcement of the inaugural Simon Gladman Travel Grant.

The grant will be awarded to an Australian citizen who contributes to the Galaxy ecosystem by:

  • participating in a Galaxy community event

  • representing Galaxy Australia or the Galaxy project at a conference or relevant forum

  • delivering training to Galaxy administrators or users

The grant of AU$5,000 will be awarded annually for travel undertaken from 2024 onwards through the reimbursement of airfare, accommodation and/or event registration expenses.
