WEBINAR SERIES: Using Containers in Bioinformatics

Presenter: Dr Marco De La Pierre, Supercomputing Applications Specialist, Pawsey Supercomputing Centre

Using containers in bioinformatics can bring benefits like software portability, data reproducibility and improved collaboration. Are containers the right fit for your research?

This three-part series begins with the basics of what containers are and how they can be useful. You’ll need to be familiar with command line interactions before starting off with Part 1. If you want to continue, you can optionally register for Parts 2 and 3 - intermediate level webinars that will demonstrate how to use containers in your own work. Parts 2 and 3 are not for beginners, so you will need to have watched Part 1 to attend. More detailed descriptions of the webinars are available on the registration pages for each event.

We encourage you to bring along your computer so you can get some hands-on practice while you’re watching all three webinars.

Part 1 - Getting Started with Containers (90min)

What are containers? Who uses them? When, and why? You'll hear an expert's overview of using containers on supercomputers and the Cloud, and learn from real life examples of simple, domain-agnostic use. Beginner level (command line familiarity required).

Monday 15 June 2020: 2:00-3:30 pm AEST / 12:00-1:30 pm AWST / 1:30-3:00 pm ACST

Part 2 - Customising your Containers (60min)

How do you build a customised container image? Learn about advanced container building and running interactive graphical applications with examples using RStudio and Python/Jupyter. Intermediate level (you need to have watched Part 1).

Tuesday 16 June 2020: 2:00-3:00 pm AEST / 12:00-1:00 pm AWST / 1:30-2:30 pm ACST

Part 3 - Scaling Research using Containers (60min)

Do you need to run applications that are characterised by distributed computing, GPU acceleration, or intensive Input/Output (I/O)? Learn how to set up containers to make the most out of applications in a high performance computing scenario. Intermediate level (you need to have watched Part 1). Wednesday 17 June 2020: 2:00-3:00 pm AEST / 12:00-1:00 pm AWST / 1:30-2:30 pm ACST

Webinar registrants will be invited to participate in supplementary online workshops. These hands-on sessions will allow researchers to work on their own real-world challenges under the guidance of experts. Numbers will be limited as we pilot this new format, but we will offer more workshops to a wider audience at a later date.

This webinar series was developed in collaboration with Pawsey Supercomputing Centre. Pawsey Training assists researchers to maximise the benefit of using supercomputers.
