MEETING: Building active communities around research infrastructure

This meeting has ended. There is no recording, but you can download Katharina’s slides.

Dr Katharina F Heil is the Programme Manager Communities & Training for ELIXIR, the European life sciences infrastructure that brings together scientists from 23 countries and over 250 research institutes. Katharina works to ensure alignment of ELIXIR Communities and Platforms, to ultimately bring together life science resources across Europe.

Forming a single infrastructure that connects so many individuals and organisations is a complicated task. Katharina acts as an interdisciplinary and international team-player to bridge gaps between scientific ideas and industry, as well as between different research ideas. She brings experience in project management, leadership, analytical and communication skills to establish new collaborations, optimise work streams, and help others to grow and make the best use of available technologies and resources.

In this meeting, we ask Katharina to share her reflections on:

  • What makes a successful research infrastructure community?

  • What are the roles that engagement and training play in building communities of users and developers around research infrastructures?

  • What opportunities exist to maximise collaboration between organisations, to foster engagement with researcher and developer communities?

  • What future community and training opportunities are on the horizon?

Speakers:

Dr. Katharina F Heil is ELIXIR’s Programme Manager Communities & Training and past president of the Erasmus Mundus Association. She has operational and strategic oversight of ELIXIR’s Communities, bringing together experts across Europe to develop standards, services and training within specific life science domains. Additionally, Katharina coordinates ELIXIR Training Platform activities, to strengthen and grow bioinformatics training capacity and competence across Europe. She also contributes to the strategic coordination of European projects.

This role allows her to shape and enable interdisciplinary research across Europe and globally, and benefits from her excellent communication skills. She received a joint PhD from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland/UK and KTH, Sweden in 2017.

Date/time: 21 July 2023, 12 - 1 pm AEST / 11:30am - 12:30pm ACST / 10am - 11am AWST

Who the meeting is for:

This event is for people interested in the opportunities that scientific engagement, community building and training can bring to research infrastructures. The presentation will be followed by an opportunity to ask Katharina questions and discuss the topic with other attendees.
